Laura’s personal story
The thing about stories is that they change depending on who’s telling them. As you continue to evolve (and age in calendar years) you tend to look back on your life with a different perspective. This is how it’s been for me and telling my story.
I could say my interest in meditation started when I was a teenager and at the age of 20 I learnt Vedic meditation as the stress of university life was taking a toll on my health. Although I was very efficient and successful in my work and study, I was experiencing low energy levels, digestive problems, and varying degrees of anxiety, panic attacks, and overwhelm. I hadn’t been taught how to process and digest my emotions. The culture I had grown up in praised materialism and everything was about how you looked and what you did, so I put my attention on that. I couldn’t work out how to turn my mind off and as a consequence my body was in a constant state of stress. This was the story I used to tell.
But as I look back now, I see something deeper going on. I see a powerful energy and intelligence at the source of my being waking up and no cultural context for it. I see my inability to sit still as a child and the agitation that grew in my body over the years (that developed into ‘anxiety’) as strong energy looking for a productive outlet. I see all those times I spent as a kid in headstand as an intuitive way of grounding this energy that I came to know as kundalini shakti. I see the strange ways my body would move or my singing of beautiful songs as kriyas - spontaneous actions coming from an intelligence far greater than my mind. I see my nightmares as stress release. My vivid dreams as access to subtler realms of consciousness. I see my pain and suffering as the impetus to seek a different path to the mainstream. A choiceless choice to seek the real truth. Ultimately the reason for being born in this life.
On a more relative level, after learning Vedic meditation I saw a profound shift not only in my physical health but on a personal level too; feeling happier, more connected, less overwhelmed, and more self-aware. I had found something I could do by myself, everyday, no matter where I was or what I was doing. This helped me manage my stress levels and get the deep rest my body was craving. It also opened me up to a whole new way of being and living. I dived deep into the Vedic knowledge, which awoke within me the desire to study Vedic meditation and the Veda – the teachings from which this ancient body of wisdom is derived. I began to understand my past experiences through a framework that integrated the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of a human being.
Over the past 16 years I’ve trained intensively with teachers in Australia and India, dedicating myself to the ancient Shankaracharya lineage. As I look back, I see the whole story of my life leading to this and the opportunity to be of service to all of life. My desire is to share the wisdom of Vedic meditation, Ayurveda, and Vedanta, making it relevant for living in today’s world. I'm also passionate about creating community and supporting my students through their awakening experiences.
I’m now based in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, teaching the simple and effortless practice of Vedic meditation. I also travel to Melbourne to teach and connect with our community, and run meditation retreats in India and Australia. For me, it's all about sharing simple ‘how-to’ techniques for creating balance and harmony while guiding you to live a radical and fiercely loving life in flow with nature.
